"While I would have settled for a draw before the game, I'm disappointed that Saints didn't grab all three points. We put in another excellent, solid performance as we did against Middlesbrough and Liverpool.. All we need now are the points.
We were a little better going forward thanks to Fabrice Fernandes who has been given the nod by Strachan to be as creative as possible. While the results could be better, the team itself is playing pretty well and so there's not too much to be worried about at this stage of the season.
Saints played well defensively and our possession in midfield was excellent thanks to a dynamic Marsden performance..
Chelsea were subdued and kept firmly in the pockets of their Saints markers. I was a little surprised to see Zenden and De Lucas kept so quiet after seeing the highlights of Chelsea's opening two games.
JFH was really quiet. For such a prolific striker he is looking very tired at the moment. Being substituted at half time won't have helped his mood any.
Where Saints do lack is that final ball from midfield. Perhaps better use of Anders Svensson as an attacking midfielder would provide this vital missing link, but we need to do something. Had we grabbed a second last night when we had the chance, Chelsea wouldn't have got back into the game.
Our man of the match had to be Paul Williams. He hardly put a foot wrong and it was only when Gudjohnsen came on that I felt Chelsea posed any real threat. Not bad for a free transfer from Coventry.
Saints aren't in Chelsea's financial league, but I think we matched them very well last night. It's another sign that Saints have moved away from being perennial relegation candidates.
Chelsea undoubtedly have a bright season ahead of them. A point at St. Mary's was a good result. In addition Ranieri will have learned that he has to come up with a different set of tactics if he hopes to overcome teams such as ourselves. Chelsea tried to get forward far too often early in the game. This allowed Saints to get plenty of space to get balls forward forcing Chelsea backwards where they struggled to dominate the game."
