Melchiot, who joined Chelsea from Ajax on a Bosman ruling in 1999 had played over 100 times for the Dutch club and is highly thought of as a versatile and strong defender or midfielder.
Ronald Koeman is quoted as saying: “Melchiot is the type of versatile player that would be of great value to our squad.”
“If we are still in a good position in the champions league when the transfer window opens again, I will be looking to strengthen the team.”
Meanwhile, Chelsea have received a double injury boost ahead of Thursday’s UEFA Cup tie against Viking FK with Manu Petit and Graeme Le Saux both declaring themselves fit. They are both included in the squad travelling to Norway for the second leg. Let’s hope that The Blues can build confidently on their slender 2-1 lead!
