Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen is hopeful of soon signing a new contract at Stamford Bridge, with his current deal due to the expire at the end of the season.
Christensen has had a rollercoaster existence since permanently linking up with the Chelsea first-team in 2017 after a two-year loan at Borussia Monchengladbach, but he was a regular starter under Thomas Tuchel in the second half of last season and has kept that place so far in 2021/22.
The Danish international had only started five league games last season under former boss Frank Lampard. But, as was also the case with Antonio Rudiger, he was given a reprieve by the new manager and eventually helped the Blues finish third and win the Champions League.
That new lease of life at Stamford Bridge has helped ease contract talks, with reports earlier in the month suggesting Christensen is close to putting pen to paper on a new long-term contract in London.
Now, Christensen has said that ‘it looks good’ as far as a new Chelsea contract is concerned.
“I know a lot is being said right now. I cannot say too much, but I think it looks good,” the 25-year-old told Danish outlet Ekstra Bladet while on international duty this week.
“We have won the Champions League and the Super Cup. I am very happy to be in the club and feel Chelsea are the right place to be in England. I know Thomas Tuchel believes in me. I have also played a big role since he came,” he added.
“I had a very difficult period under Lampard, shortly before he was fired. Now, luckily, it's going the right way for me. But yes, things can go fast in this world. The most important thing is just that I have never given up.”
Christensen is set to make his landmark 50th senior appearance for Denmark in their World Cup qualifier for Israel on Tuesday night. He made his debut way back in 2015 at the age of 19 and went to the World Cup in 2018 and Euro 2020 over the summer.
