Arsenal and United In The Hunt For Eidur

Last updated : 21 July 2002 By -

Writing in today's Sunday Mirror Paul Hetherington proclaims that Arsenal and Manchester United are set to do battle as both strive to sign Chelsea’s Icelandic star Eidur Gudjohnsen.

Paul’s story again focuses on Chelsea’s supposed financial concerns and that as a result of their financial troubles, the club may be tempted to part with the exceptional Chelsea striker.

Paul writes: "The blues will reluctantly cash in on their exciting striker to reduce debts of £90million. And such is Chelsea’s need to cut their overheads and wage bill that 23-year-old Gudjohnsen could be sacrificed for £10million – less than his market value".

Due to Chelsea’s current financial difficulties, Paul claims that both Arsenal and Manchester United are poised to tempt Chelsea into selling.

Let’s face facts and take a number of deep breaths shall we? Firstly, how many times has this story done the rounds the last few weeks? If it isn’t Arsenal or United that are set buy Eidur then Blackburn and others are willing and waiting. If it isn’t Eidur going to Highbury or Old Trafford then it’s Jimmy going to Barcelona etc etc.

Myself, I am a bit bored of all this now.

I’m sure if other clubs are aware that Chelsea are short of a few quid then I am pretty certain that a few enquiries may have been made regarding the availability of Jimmy or Eidur. Maybe, the focus is now on Eidur because Jimmy has turned 30 and therefore other clubs are less willing to pay £20million for a player of that age?

Let’s face it most clubs seem short of a few quid at the moment and I am sure Chelsea will have been tempted by a number of offers.

Let’s not worry about it until it happens! I’m pretty confident that Uncle Ken, Claudio et al have the situation under control and I’m pretty sure Eidur and Jimmy know what they are doing and where, next season.

If you think differently…..let me know!
