Villas-Boas, a compatriot of Mourinho and former colleague at Porto, Chelsea and Inter Milan, took charge of the Stamford Bridge club last week.
At just 33, The Portuguese becomes the youngest manager in the Premier League and is tipped for a bright future, having been guided by both Bobby Robson and Mourinho.
However, Villas-Boas says the link to Real Madrid boss Mourinho stops there and insists he is his own man with his own style ahead of his debut campaign in English football.
"I am linked with Jose because we worked together, but I don't go out of my way to talk about it," he told The Sunday Mirror.
"We are different people, have different personalities and different views on the game.
"I respect Jose, but I'm not a clone. I work of my own accord. I don't want to work with restraints or worry what Jose thinks."
