Hargreaves, who also qualified to play for Germany before he made his first appearance for England, is a defensive midfielder by nature- but his versatility means he can play almost anywhere on the pitch.

Such versatility would have made him a very useful signing for Chelsea- but the bid was shot down immediately by Bayern. Hargreaves said "It was not a question of me accepting the offer as from Bayern's end they told me that they were not interested.

"I was happy with that, because I want to play in the team here - I am needed here and it shows me that it's nice to know there is a market for me out there."
