Italy want Carlo Ancelotti as their next national manager.
Reports flying out of Rome are suggesting that Ancelotti will replace Marcelo Lippi, who is expected to step down as Italy boss after the summer’s World Cup.
Ancelotti is ahead in race to become the boss of his nation.
Also in the running is Cagliari coach Massimiliano Allegri.
Will the lure of the nation persuade Ancelotti to ditch the remaining two years of his contract at SW6?
Following defeat to Manchester City at Home and another humiliating defeat to Inter Milan in the Champions League, Ancelloti’s position at the Bridge was becoming the subject of heated debate.
However two remarkable victories in the league has restored his credibility.
But if the Blues suffer a defeat at Old Trafford on Saturday and lose to Aston Villa in the FA Cup semi-final, Ancelotti might prefer to hot foot it back to Italy.
Lippi had said that the head of the Italian football federation already knows what his position will be after the World Cup.
This is the clearest signal yet that the Italian’s are going to have to search for a new boss.
If Fabio Capello leaves the England job, as expected if the teams fails to reach the semi-finals, then he could be added to the mix.
But it’s the prospect of yet another managerial change at Chelsea that will vex the already frustrated Chelsea fan.
My sources at Chelsea have revealed to me that while Jose Mourinho is happy to discuss returning to Chelsea, the very top brass at the club are lobbying against the idea.
If Chelsea fail again to nab silverware, the cry for Mourinho’s return may be too great for even Roman Abramovich to ignore.
“Everything is currently possible,” said my source.
What do you think of the prospect of Chelsea looking for yet another man to take the helm?
