Cesar Azpilicueta issues Chelsea contract update

Cesar Azpilicueta has remained coy over his Chelsea future, revealing that the “moment will come” to discuss a fresh contract.

The skipper’s current Blues deal is set to expire at the end of the season with both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid interested in bringing him in on a free transfer.

Atleti may now have to step up their efforts to sign the veteran too, after Kieran Trippier’s move to Newcastle was confirmed on Friday morning.

Despite this, 90min understands Chelsea remain confident Azpilicueta will stay at the club beyond the summer. However, as was reported last month, the ongoing uncertainty has been a source of concern within the dressing room.

Azpilicueta’s latest interview will have done little to reassure his teammates as he refused to commit his future, while also insisting that he remains focussed on his football.

“As I always said, I feel I have the trust and confidence of the club and now I am focused on every game,” he said.

“They are very tough games, and I am enjoying the moment. Eventually the moment will come, but I am fully focused on hopefully getting as many trophies as we can and then we will see.

“I cannot say anything more than that I am really committed and have a lot of things ahead in the coming months and hopefully we can have a very good season.”

Azpilicueta is not the only Chelsea defender with an uncertain future heading into the summer. Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen are both out of contract at the end of the season with the Blues in danger of defensive crisis if breakthroughs in talks cannot be achieved.

In better news, Thiago Silva recently committed his future to the club, extending his stay at Stamford Bridge until the end of the 2022/23 campaign.
