FIFA confirmed that Drogba has applied for special permission to join another club outside of the transfer window as the striker looks to stay fit ahead of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.
?The FIFA administration services are looking into it.? FIFA said in a statement.
The 34-year-old has also been linked with Liverpool, with Brendan Rodgers looking for more attacking options, with only one fit senior squad striker at Anfield.
Drogba scored eight goals in eleven games for Shanghai Shenua, after joining up with former team mates Nicolas Anelka in June, agreeing a two-and-a-half-year contract with the Chinese giants.
The Ivory Coast international made 342 appearances for the Blues, scoring 157 goals. Drogba's last game for Chelsea was the 2011-12 Champions League final in which he scored the winning penalty.
