The Ghana international will undergo a series of tests over the weekend after suffering the injury in a practice session at the club's Cobham training ground last week.
Chelsea confirmed on their official website that Essien has suffered an injury to his right knee but refused to confirm reports that the midfielder's problem was serious.
A Chelsea spokesman said: 'People have been speculating about the extent of the injury, but it is dangerous to jump the gun. Michael will be sent away for tests over the weekend and we will not be commenting further until the results of those tests are known.
'We want to make sure we have the full picture and I don't think we will know how serious it is until Monday at the earliest.'
Essien will be concerned, however, that he is set for another lengthy spell on the sidelines, having suffered a similar problem in September 2008. Then, he damaged his anterior cruciate ligament while on international duty, ruling him outfor six months
