Chelsea Sack Osgood

I will say it again.

Chelsea legend Peter Osgood, one of the all-time greatest Chelsea players, has been sensationally sacked By Ken Bates. Chelsea’s former No. 9 and hero of The Shed, had been employed by the club as a matchday host for executive fans. However, breaking the news in a morning radio interview on "Talk Sport", Osgood reveals that he had only found out that he had been sacked when Bates wrote to him.

Osgood said, "Mr. Bates didn’t even have the decency to give me a call and tell me personally. I’m gutted but that just about sums the club up".

Osgood, 55 is considered one of Chelsea’s greatest ever players who famously, scored in every round of Chelsea's inaugural FA Cup victory in 1970 as well as scoring in both Cup Winners Cup Final games against Real Madrid. Osgood was a hugely popluar figure amongst present day supporters and for the last eight years had worked successfully as a match day host.

Osgood insists his dismissal is fuelled by a clash of personalities with Chelsea’s chairman and that Bates has shown Peter a distinct "lack of respect". Chelsea however, say the dismissal is a "cost cutting exercise". Osgood stated, "They are getting rid of me to save themselves £10,000-a-year which is a pittance. They said they have an abundance of current players to show guests round the club. That doesn’t say a lot for the way the treat former players. It’s very sad because I think it’s become a personal thing between me and the Chairman."

"I have never had a row with him, I’ve always called him Mr. Bates and yet I get treated like this. It’s clearly a clash of personalities."

"I gave the club 20 years of my life and yet they treat me like this. All I got was a letter through the post telling me that effectively they wanted to cut costs and I’m out of the door".

Peter Osgood will always be regarded as "The King of Stamford Bridge" whatever the feelings of Mr.Bates.

I will not pass comment, I will keep my feelings to myself but I do want to hear yours - stevefurlong@chelsea-mad.co.uk - ! The only thing I will say is this….If it is Mr. Bates’ aim to isolate himself from the Chelsea supporters………………………..??

I am in despair.  I have nothing left to say. So, I will leave you with Ken’s program notes from Leicester 13th October 2001……..

"Peter Osgood was one of our greatest players ever and unlike some former so-called legends, he has not believed that the world owes him a living - he has got on with his life and earned one, without a trace of envy because today's player's megabuck earnings passed him by. On the 10th November 2001 at 3.00pm we will be holding a testimonial for Peter. So please turn up and support him. It is your opportunity to say thank you for those wonderful memories that he gave you!"
