Sturridge has often been played out of position for the Premier League title chasers, but has adapted well as one of the wide players in an attacking three.

However, so impressive has he been that he was handed a chance in his preferred centre forward role in the league game at Blackburn.

And having also secured a spot in Fabio Capello's England squad - where he is expected to make his debut against Spain at Wembley - Chelsea are now prepared to offer him a new deal.

Sturridge has hit five goals in nine games this season, including a wonderful back-heeled effort against Sunderland, after returning from a successful loan spell with Bolton in the second half of last term.

His current deal runs out at the end of next season and is worth ?60,000 per week. But according to the Mirror, Chelsea are prepared to offer him terms of ?90,000 until 2016.
