The Gudjohnsen saga has been ongoing for the past year. Last July his agent, Peter Harrison, claimed that Eidur wanted a new contract and would go elsewhere if his talents weren't appreciated.

A year on, and the new contract is finally agreed. Eidur will now remain at the club until 2006, with his wages boosted to an estimated £30,000 a week.

And he was clearly delighted with his new deal, saying "There's been speculation going on for months about my future so I'm just glad that it's over. I've always stated how much I enjoy it here and hopefully we're going into a great season.

"I'm delighted that my future is at Chelsea and the people at the club see it that way. These are exciting times for the fans and the club in general. I'm looking forward to seeing where this will take the club."
