The Dutchman can be thankful of his English contingent who in the form of John Terry and Frank Lampard scored the goals that defeated Wigan and put Chelsea in second-place on goal difference over Liverpool.
But he does believe that the title is Manchester United's to lose
"I'm realistic that we have to win all our games more comfortably," said the Dutchman.
"And I'll have to ask Edwin van der Sar if he would like to have a few more balls in his net. I don't know he is willing to do so. But as long as we have the possibility, we will try and keep it going."
Hiddink then talked of Terry and what he can do: "John Terry can give me something extra in the form of goals, but his first job is to defend and to organise our defence.
"He is so strong at set-pieces. He is also calm when many other defenders are not."
Of Lampard, Hiddink is like every other Chelsea manager - in awe.
"I already had respect for Lampard as an opponent," admitted Hiddink.
He went on to defend allegations against Lampard for the winning goal.
"I've seen the situation for the goal. There was a lot of shuffling in both boxes during the game.
"So the ref should have given five or six penalties.
"But there was not a big challenge by Lampard on Melchiot.
But there was also a challenge just before on Ballack when he headed the ball onto Lampard."
Hiddink was happy with the three points but not happy overall with the performance..
"We reacted very well after conceding the equaliser," said Hiddink.
"We started well, and playing after Wednesday (in the Champions League against Juventus], it's difficult, especially against Wigan. They deserve respect and played decent football. But we should have scored in the first 25 minutes.
"But our reaction was good and I'm happy we got the winner in the 90th minute.
"But what I like to see is us kill the game off when we dominate.
I'm not happy about the way we gave away control.
"But I'm satisfied with the attitude of the team as a whole.
"I should not need to motivate players, that must come from within. But I will challenge them if they don't show motivation - so far and I've only been here 10 days, I'm happy with what I've seen from them."
Steve Bruce lamented what he believes are referees favouring the so-called big sides.
"We just don't seem to get the decisions at places like Old Trafford, Liverpool or others," he said.
"We deserved something from this game, the ref made poor decisions. Lampard has his hands around Melchiot and he headed in the winner.
"It's a shame we did not take our chances, but we kept at it.
"The refs seem to be influenced by these teams and it does not seems to matter that they are playing only little Wigan.
"The next three games will be defining for our season - if we get something from then, then the season is back on again."
