After the club announced that they had sacked Jose Mourinho, they also stated that they would not be commenting further until a appointment was to be made regarding a replacement for the Portuguese who, in two spells at SW6 as well as a host of cup, had won the Premier League three times for them.
So it was somewhat of a surprise to discover that the left-hand did not tell the right hand what was going on.
Chelsea's technical director Michael Emenalo rocked up on Chelsea TV, the club's official mouthpiece, this evening to explain that essentially it was all Mourinho's fault and the players are not to blame.
In an tense interview Emenalo, when asked by the seemingly nervous interviewer why was Mourinho sacked after being handed a four-year deal in August, he said: "That's exactly the point. That contract clearly signifies that what happened today was not a premeditated decision. It was a decision taken to protect the interests of the club.
"Whilst there is a huge sentiment for the individual who has done so much for the club, the fact of the matter remains that Chelsea football club is in trouble and the results are not good. There obviously seemed to be palpable discord between manager and players. And we feel it was time to act.
He continued: "Well I think that the owner is forced to make what was was a very tough decision for the good of the club. You know, make no mistake about it, Chelsea football club, one of the biggest football club's in the world is one point above relegation in the English Premier League and that is not good enough. And anybody or any fan, even those who are not fans, who love the club, who have any kind of affiliation to the club can understand that this club is in trouble and something needed to be done."
What role have the players, if any have they had in this? He was asked.
He said: "Well, you know, the same people need to remember that, you know, this is essentially the same group of players who won the league and League Cup last season and they did It in style. And they did it by showing commitment, and by sweating blood, tears and blood for the club when needed. They played to instruction. They adhered to everything the manager asked them to do. So I think it's very easy to make that kind of inference but it's not one that the club accepts. Obviously we know now the players have a responsibility to go out and prove everybody wrong and show a certain level of commitment to the decision made tonight and to try to get the club up the league table, that is what they have to do, that is what they are supposed to do and I believe that is what they have been trying to do.
He was asked: "There a lot of football now to play in the festive period and with Sunderland on Saturday, the fans will be concerned about what happens now.
He replied: "Well you are not a big club if you don't have contingency plans for situations like this and we are a big club who has quality coaches embedded within the club. And I think we will be okay for Saturday. We will have competent people come up and help with preparation for the game on Saturday. And make no mistake about it, the club is working vigorously and actively to make sure the situation in regards to the managerial appointment is taken care of as soon as possible."
What do you make of Emenalo point of view.
For me it was rather noticeable that he never mentioned Mourinho's name once.anyhow, have your say in the message board now.
