Terry was fielding questions for the first time since allegations he aimed a racist remark at Anton Ferdinand during Chelsea's game against Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road last month.
The defender will lead out Fabio Capello's team against Sweden at Wembley but he was prevented by the FA from commenting directly on the accusations due to the police investigation.
Looking sharp: John Terry gets away from Theo Walcott in training on Monday
England manager Capello is planning more experiments with his team. Jack Rodwell, Kyle Walker and Bobby Zamora will all start their first games for their country.
One issue, however, has dominated thebuild-up. 'I wish I could have come last week and captained the side but the manager made his decision,' said Terry, who was left out of Saturday's moraleboosting 1-0 win over Spain.
'I would have faced that (the fall-out from the abuse case) if he'd picked me and I said that to the manager. I would have dealt with it my way, like I am now.
'I've never done things any differently and I won't do things differently in the future. I'm not someone to hide away.
'Unfortunately, with the police and the FA, I can't speak about that. But I'm here and I'm very proud to be England captain.'
Planning ahead: Manager Fabio Capello (2nd right) plots how to beat Sweden
Against Sweden at Wembley tonight, Terry will lead out his country as skipper for the 34th time, matching Alan Shearer. Only Bobby Moore, Billy Wright, Bryan Robson and David Beckham have captained England on more occasions.
'Nothing's changed,' said Terry. 'I'mfine, 100 per cent, no problems. It's been nice that the players have supported me publicly and personally. I don't want to talk about people individually but, from across the world, players and managers have been on the phone and been very supportive of me.'
England fans gave Terry a mixed reception as he warmed up on the touchline with the other substitutes during the Spain game on Saturday. There were a few boos but there was plenty of applause.
'I'd always get a couple of jeers regardless,' said Terry. 'I was quite happy with that. I didn't know what to expect. It's nice to get applauded by the fans.

Big chance: Daniel Sturridge is set to make his England bow against Sweden
'I've played an awful lot for England. It probably has put me at ease. It is important as a player to deal with your ups and downs, which I've done throughout my career.'
Capello insisted he is happy for Terry to lead out his team.
'I am comfortable, absolutely,' said the England manager. 'It is finished, OK? Thanks. You know why? Innocent until guilty.'
