Johnson had only played 14 senior games by the time Chelsea decided to pay West Ham £6 million for his services. And he is looking better with every game he plays- with his performance against Sparta showing real maturity.

Johnson said "I enjoyed every minute of it. This is a new experience for me.

"You are playing up against a different kind of opponent. In the Premiership there are more tackles and it's more of a battle but against Sparta Prague you had to be sensible because, if you tackled hard, they would sometimes roll around the pitch.

"I thought we deserved our win but Sparta were a decent side. The one sure thing is that, at this level, there are no mugs."
