Mourinho, 43, was awarded his country's highest civilian honour - the Grand Officer of the Order of Infante Dom Henrique - in London on Monday.
"I really want to coach the Portuguese national team and I feel as though Portugal also want it," he said.
"The ideal time would be 12 years from now, covering the World Cup (2018) and the European Championships (2020)."
Mourinho has enjoyed a hugely successful managerial career, winning the league championship, domestic cup and Uefa Cup in his first full season at Porto.
He followed that up with another league title and a surprise Champions League triumph the following season before moving to Chelsea - where he won the Premiership and Carling Cup in the 2004-2005 campaign.
