John Terry put in a virtuoso performance in the 0-0 draw against Arsenal on Sunday but is still not counting his chickens in regard to when they will win the title, although he is confident they will.
"The point on Sunday was a step to where we want to go," he said.
"It's not mathematically done yet. It's still possible for other sides to catch us, but it's a big step. "The main thing at the Emirates was not to let Arsenal to gain points on us and we did that. It was a very good performance.
"It was a tough game. Arsenal are a very good side. They are up there fighting and have been in great form too. They have some world-class players. But we nullified them."
Terry explained that without injured strikers Diego Costa and Loic Remy, the match would be different to the 1-0 win they achieved over Manchester United the previous weekend.
"People thought we would come to north London and sit back like we did against Man United, but we gave it a go," he said.
"And it was kind of end to end, perhaps too much. In the second half we were more In control and got our possession up which will please the manager.
"We were very good against Arsenal with two blocks (to defend) but we were ready to go at them and we showed that threat by getting behind them."
While Terry's performance was described as amazing by his manager Jose Mourinho, Terry himself was in generous mood when discussing penalty shouts for his players which were dismissed by referee Michael Oliver.
"I think he probably got them right, all of them, actually," he said.
"The ones on defenders when the ball is really close are never going to be given. All the captains were briefed by referees before the season and they said they won't be given, it's a simple as that."
With six more points required, can Terry smell the title back at SW6 after a five-year absence?
"Yeah, we are almost there."
Terry was speaking before Wednesday's league encounter away to Leicester City. "Leicester are fighting for points and are also in good form, so it's still. It over. But if we go there and pick up the three points. We are closer."
