John Terry will be out of action for six weeks.
The Chelsea capatain limped off from Sunday's ill-tempered defeat to Arsenal.
He had a scan today and it revealed Terry has fractured three bones in his right foot, including his third metatarsal. The initial diagnosis suggests he may be out for six weeks.
JT out for six weeks
Chelsea FC doctor Bryan English said: "An X-ray taken in the Arsenal medical room straight after John left the field didn't show the injury.
"However as is usual with mid-foot injuries the fractures were revealed following scans, which were performed this afternoon. John will start his rehabilitation immediately with the Chelsea medical team and we will continue to monitor the injury.'
Just like last season, JT will miss the crucial Christmas and New Year games.
If six weeks is accurate then he could be back in action late January for the away game to either Birmingham or the home match against Reading.
He could also be doubtful for the England match against Switzerland in February.
