And when questioned upon Damien Duff's arrival, Birch was also very positive, replying "The more people you talk to, they all tell you what a good buy he has been. Claudio has been interested in him for some time but obviously we didn't have the wherewithal at that stage. But he was then one of our top priorities.''

However, Mr Birch wouldn't name the next big signing for Chelsea. Speculation is rife that it will be Juan Veron, but the link with Emerson hasn't died down yet. One thing's for sure- we need a new midfielder...
