The Brazilian centre-back attracted the headlines last weekend when, along with Juan Mata, he was omitted altogether from Mourinho's match day 18 for the Barclays Premier League victory over Fulham at Stamford Bridge.
The pair returned to the Portuguese's starting XI for Tuesday night's 2-0 Capital One Cup win at Swindon, with Luiz playing the first half in central defence before being pushed into a defensive midfield role for the second period following injuries to Marco van Ginkel and Ramires.
And the 26-year-old, seen by some as a defensive liability but nevertheless linked with a summer move to Barcelona, insists he was happy to be involved again.
Asked how he had been affected after being left out against Fulham, Luiz said: "It was just one game. Sometimes when other players go out of the team, people don't say anything.
"I don't need to prove anything. Everyone knows who David Luiz is, I want to play football and enjoy myself on the pitch so when I have an opportunity to play, I want to enjoy just that.
"I am just one player in the team. Sometimes the manager can put me in, sometimes not. It's his choice."
Luiz added: "Last year you could talk about seven players being on the bench and the next year is the same. Mourinho chooses his 11 players to play, his philosophy and tries to do the best job for Chelsea. That for me is normal."
Mourinho is fully aware of the importance of the League Cup having successfully targeted the competition as his maiden piece of silverware during his first stint in charge of the west London club, winning it in 2005 and then again in 2007.
And he sent out his clear intentions this time around as he named a strong side against Swindon worth an estimated £185million, that coming in spite of 10 changes from the side who saw off Fulham last Saturday.
