Luke Shaw to face no FA action over referee comments

The FA have decided Manchester United defender Luke Shaw and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will face no further action for their views expressed over the officiating during their 0-0 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Shaw and United were left fuming when referee Stuart Attwell consulted the VAR monitor in the first half after an alleged handball by Callum Hudson-Odoi and decided against awarding a penalty.

Speaking to the press after the game, Solskjaer vented his frustrations at the officials' performance, suggesting that Chelsea had attempted to influence proceedings with the content posted on their official website.

He said: "Yep, 100% [it should have been a penalty]. They're shouting it's handball for our player, but when you look at it on the video, it's taken two points away from us."

Shaw then alleged that the official had told captain Harry Maguire the decision was made because there would be 'too much talk' if he had pointed to the spot.

But United quickly claimed that Shaw had simply misheard the conversation and the FA have since decided neither the manager nor the left back's comments merit further action.

Shaw said after the match: “At the time, I saw a handball. I didn't know whether it was Mason [Mount] or Callum. I just carried on. I didn't even know there was a potential check.

“I don't know why they stopped if it wasn't going to be a pen. The ref even said to Harry 'If I say it is a pen, then it is going to cause a lot of talk about it after', so I don't know what happened there.

“Harry said that they got told it was a pen. He got told it was a penalty by VAR so I'm not sure what's gone on.”
