Andre Schurrle was delighted to receive a message from Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho to invite him to Stamford Bridge for the final match of the season to receive a Premier League winners' medal
The World Cup-winning Germany forward left for Wolfsburg in January after 18 months at Stamford Bridge, with exhaustion contributing to his departure for a fee in the region of £22million.
Schurrle, who made 14 Premier League appearances, scoring three goals, told BBC World Service's World Football programme: "I didn't know that I'd get a medal when I didn't play most of the second half of the season.
"Jose Mourinho sent me a text to say that I'd get a medal and he asked me to come to the last game (against Sunderland on May 24)
That was very nice for me.
"I'm really happy for the boys
They played a very good second half of the season so of course for me it's good to get a medal but the boys did the work."
After providing the assist for Mario Gotze's World Cup-clinching goal, Schurrle started the season well with a fine goal at Burnley before fading and leaving Chelsea for around £8m more than he was signed for in June 2013.
"I had the World Cup which was very perfect for me and the start of the season was good as well," he added.
"Then there came a little bit of a period for me where my body didn't feel very good, I was not clear in my head and I didn't have as many good moments for Chelsea.
"I wanted to come back to the Bundesliga, I wanted to feel a little bit more in the team and to get a bit more playing time.
"I love Chelsea still, I'm not frustrated, it was a great experience."
One player who hopes to have a long-term future at Chelsea is Patrick Bamford, who is currently trying to help Middlesbrough negotiate the Sky Bet Championship play-offs.
Bamford is the Football League's Championship Player of the Year after an impressive season at Boro, where he may remain on loan if they win promotion.
The 21-year-old, who has a year remaining on his current Chelsea deal, said on thefa.com: "I want to play for them (Chelsea) and I've not given up on that yet.
"There's a pressure to not only win the Premier League but also to make it to the finals of every cup that they're in.
"So there's a pressure on them to go out and buy the best players in each division and I've got to be patient.
"After this (the play-offs), I'm concentrating on the Euros (Under-21s) with England so I think by the time I'm back from the Euros I can sit down with Chelsea and see what's happening."
