Stamford Bridge hero Osgood has reacted angrily after chairman Bates dismissed the successes of yesteryear, saying they actually achieved “nothing”.
“The King of the Bridge” stated, “This man is so out of order. What he is saying is an absolute atrocity. The players from the 60s and 70s gave everything for the club.”
Chairman Ken’s apparent dismissive comments were published the day after Ian Hutchinson, one of the heroes and major contributor in both the 1970 FA Cup Finals died.
Osgood, who was recently relinquished from his post as a Chelsea matchday host was genuinely hurt by the criticism. He said, “I can’t believe what Bates said – and I’m so saddened by it.”
He continued, “I would want to sit down with him and ask why? Why do you hate us so much? What have we done for you to run us down like this?”
“We were all loyal players and gave everything for the club, while there are players there now who aren't committed.
“Ron Harris and Peter Bonetti gave 20 years of their lives to Chelsea, while Bates says they did nothing for the club and that we are non-entities.”
Peter’s obvious annoyance and anger continued: “If there was a poll among fans between Bates and the 12 men who played in the 1970 Cup final Bates would come 14th - because the ref would be more popular than him!”
We all know Ken is famous for making inappropriate and occasionally shockingly direct statements but I’m not so sure that Ken has actually stated the above. If these so called comments have meant to be have been made on ChelseaTV then Ken has been misquoted!
If they have not been taken (and re-hashed) from the club's official television channel then what was the original source of these comments?
On ChelseaTV last week the Chairman made a number of references and comparisons between the legends of the 60s and 70s with the cup successful teams of 97-2000 stating that he was pleased that the “modern” Chelsea had finally removed the “albatross” from around their necks (albatross being my metaphor not Ken’s).
The “albatross” is of course referring to the history, legends and successes that made up that team of the 1970’s. Each of us as fans looked back at Osgood, Cooke, Harris et al with admiration. Had we all spent too much energy looking back? Would we ever have a team again that would be held in such high esteem?
The Chelsea of the nineties had finally made their own mark within Chelsea’s history – we could now look to both teams for our memories and myths.
Whatever the outcome, I’m sure that we haven’t heard the last of this. Let’s put one thing straight though before we go……..Chelsea is a blend of heroes, memories, places and tales from the past as well as from the present.
Personally, I love the tales and players from 1905 (Willie Foulke etc) right through to the present day (Carlton Cole, Robert Huth) and everyone in between. All these ingredients make up the colour Blue.
There is no right and there is no wrong…..there is only Chelsea (so f*ck ‘em all, f*ck ‘em all, United, West Ham, Liverpool…)
Tell me your thoughts……
