Here's what Scotty had to say at the press conference: “This is a dream move for me. I have been lucky enough to play with a fantastic team at Charlton under an inspirational manager in Alan Curbishley. They have given me every opportunity and I will always be grateful for the support and the encouragement I received at Charlton.

“Chelsea is a big club and for a young player like me it is a once in a lifetime opportunity. They are one of the biggest clubs in the country, they’ve got big plans and ambitions and a squad of first-class players.

“The club and the fans are hungry for success and that suits me. They are all world-class players and I am sure that my own game will improve and develop playing alongside such talented players. I am also looking forward to the challenge of playing in Europe.

Claudio Ranieri said: “We want to attract the top English players to Chelsea and Scott is one of the best in the country. He is still very young but he has a range of skills which make him very adaptable.

“His talent has already been recognised at England level. He is a strong character, determined and tough with first class technical ability. This is a first class career move for him.”

Interim chief executive Paul Smith, who negotiated the deal, said: “We are delighted to have completed the signing of Scott. He is one of the outstanding young talents in this country and one of the most sought after players by the top clubs.

“We have always said that we plan to build a strong squad of players and the addition of a talented player like Scott gives us valuable extra strength. The deal also represents excellent value for money.”
