Chelsea's season has being rescued by the appointment of Guus Hiddink earlier this season.
By his admission the club were heading in the wrong direction in the league, ie out of Champions League qualification contention.
The reign of Scolari was short and not very sweet.
Chairman Bruce Buck has also admitted that the next appointment as manager must provide stability - I assume what he means by this is a manager who won't be sacked before he's had time to unpack his suitcase.
So, who is it to be?
Hiddink, a man who has demonstrated admirable integrity, complete awareness of what's needed to firefight a desperate situation would look to be an ideal choice.
Shame then that he's already in a job as national manager of Russia.
Carlos Ancelotti, AC Milan's coach - a mini-Hiddink in every sense, looks to be the bookies' favourite.
But we seem to be going down the same route as before, and the noises coming out of Milan is not promising.
Why would Ancelotti move from AC Milan to Chelsea? That has to be the question.
It could all come down to money. But do we want a manager motivated simply by cash?
Chelsea's greatest triumphs came during Jose Mourinho's reign. Whilst not an unknown, it is clear that he was coming to Chelsea before his Champions League victory with Porto.
So Chelsea were taking a gamble, now they seems to want the finished article - someone who has won it (Champs League), and bought the T-shirt.
Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon took a chance with Mourinho and it paid off in spectacular fashion.
Will Kenyon take the ultimate gamble and bring Jose back to the Bridge?
It would be audacious as it would be thrilling.
Time is a healer, and Roman Abramovich is smart enough to know a winner when he sees one.
Both men have matured in a footballing sense in recent years so it's not an unholy alliance as would appear.
It's just the sort of decision that could spark Chelsea back to the top of the league and provide Mourinho with the resources to topple Manchester United off their pedestal.
A decision has to be made soon.
Go on Roman, you know it makes sense.
