Duff joined Chelsea from Blackburn for £17million in the summer despite Souness' best efforts to convince him otherwise. And the Rovers boss is hoping his old boy doesn't make it in time for tomorrow's clash.
"I hope he doesn't return,'' Souness said. "We know all about Damien and he is a super player, who was always going to go and play for one of the big boys.
"He wasn't anywhere near his full potential here and I hope he realises that with Chelsea. I am not surprised how he has fitted in down there because I believe if you are a top player you can fit in comfortably anywhere.
"They bought him because he was a successful individual, someone who could produce a piece of magic to change a game. I think it has been a case of them learning to play with him rather than him learning to play with other players.
"He has all the talent to be one of the best left-sided players in the world; he has got that kind of talent where he can be as good as anyone you want to name.''
The good news for Souness is that it looks unlikely that Duffer will play tomorrow- which spells bad news for us Chelsea fans...
