Scores of the world's media waited outside Westminster Magistrates' Court for the Chelsea captain, who arrived wearing a grey suit and pink tie.
He did not say anything when asked for a comment.
The 31-year-old is charged with a racially aggravated public order offence.
He is accused of shouting a racist obscenity at Ferdinand, who plays for Queens Park Rangers, during a Premier League match at Loftus Road on October 23 last year.
Terry, who denies the charge, faces a maximum fine of £2,500 if convicted.
The case is expected to last five days and will be heard by Chief Magistrate Howard Riddle and no jury.
