"I said Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool… they are better than us because they have a bigger squad. But now we are building a very very good team and now I can put other new champions in and it is very important to close the gap between us and the other three teams.
"The owner said you can buy the players but not the wins. It is important to work hard. I think we all want to win, the owner, me, the players… we all want to win. "
Asked if he would be adding Nigel Martin to his hoardes of summer signings he refused to be drawn, adding: "I will not talk about Nigel Martyn, then we will be on to Raul and Steven Gerrard and all the rest."
"I want to buy champions that will be able to work my way. I need a lot of champions because competition is hard and we want to do well in every competition. And I cannot guarantee that if a player starts at the beginning [of the season] he will always be ready."
The press also had a number of questions for Wayne Bridge, Glen Johnson and Damien Duff. But Marco Ambrosio and Geremi, both speaking through interpreters, only had to field a couple of questions each.
Both Wayne Bridge and Glen Johnson spoke of their plans for the future- Johnson is aiming merely to break into the Chelsea side, whilst Bridge has bigger plans... such as replacing Ashley Cole as England left back.
But, unsurprisingly, Damien Duff was the main attraction. And I have to say that the lad handled it all very well- he seemed a bit too relaxed for it all! He did, however, speak of how tough it was to leave Blackburn after spending his whole career there.
Other than that, there was nothing else of real note to report. In fact, the whole thing was a bit of an anti-climax. I expected at least some sort of comment on our transfer targets...
