The Time Is Now...

Before the draw was made earlier today, I was thinking of the teams I wanted drawn out of the hat- bring on the big guns was my initial thought! But those thoughts didn't last very long, as the UEFA guys were babbling away...

Then the first team was pulled out of the hat: FC Porto. Please let Chelsea be next, we'll show those Mancs how to beat the Portugese jessies! But it wasn't to be- Olympique Lyon were drawn to play them instead.

Next up.... the mighty Real Madrid! Come on Chelsea, please pull out Chelsea next! Alas, it was to end in a major anti-climax, as AS Monaco were drawn to face Los Galactico's, a Monaco side managed by former Chelsea star Didier Deschamps.

As the next team were being drawn, my mind started to stray a little- with those four teams all drawn, that left us facing either Arsenal, AC Milan or Deportivo La Coruna! But those thoughts were interupted as I heard the name "Chelsea" called out as the next team drawn out!

Things were getting tense as one of the Uefa guys was unscrewing the Kinder Egg-esque ball to reveal the name of our Champions League Quarter final opponent.... ARSENAL!

Another chance to finally beat those North London/French goons! There are several ways of approaching the game- from the players point of view, of course.

One way is to think that Arsenal cannot be beaten domestically, so why will that change in Europe? Another is to think that by law of averages we are due a result against them sooner or later.... right?

But I think that the players should be looking at things like this: yes, Arsenal have beaten us 3 times in domestic action this year. Yes, they have ended our hopes in the FA Cup and in the league.

But their great record against us is in domestic action- as things stand, we go into this game against them with a clean slate, having never met them in Europe before. Forget league form, our Champions League form is excellent.

Yes, the Gunners have won their last five games in Europe, but they also lost their first three. We have lost just once in the Champions League this season. We have conceded goals in just two European games out of ten. We have not conceded a Champions League goal in our last five outings.

Perhaps I am being a bit too optimistic here, but why be pessimistic just because we have drawn Arsenal? Win or lose, it's going to be a great tie and it is just the next chapter in what has already proved to be an enthralling season!
