Thiago Silva agrees to extend Chelsea contract

Thiago Silva has agreed terms on a contract extension at Chelsea, 90min understands.

The 38-year-old has been one of a select few players to stand out at Stamford Bridge this season, defying his advancing years with some commanding performances in central defence.

He has become the cornerstone of Graham Potter's backline - providing the experience and seniority required to now play alongside January newcomer Benoit Badiashile - and also played a prominent role for Brazil at the recent 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Silva's current deal in west London expires at the end of the season, but 90min understands that he is ready to put pen to paper on a contract extension as he and his family are enjoying life in the capital.

The former Paris Saint-Germain captain has generated interest from elsewhere but is ready commit to the Blues for another season - a contract until the summer of 2024 would take Silva through to just shy of his 40th birthday.

Listen now as Scott Saunders hosts Graeme Bailey and Toby Cudworth to discuss the latest transfer news. On today's agenda: Dusan Vlahovic, Anthony Gordon, Enzo Fernandes, Amadou Onana, Malo Gusto, Nicolo Zaniolo, Pedro Porro, Weston McKennie, Milan Skriniar, Maiximo Perrone & more!

Committing Silva to a new contract would be a huge boost for Potter, who is still finding his feet at Chelsea after a difficult start to his tenure.

The former Brighton boss has welcomed Mykhailo Mudryk and Noni Madueke to Chelsea during the January transfer window, but the Blues are just about hanging on to a place in the top half of the Premier League after winning only eight of the 20 games they have played.

A 0-0 draw against Liverpool was secured last time out; a game in which Silva showed his continued worth with an outstanding defensive display.
