This is quite a hot topic of discussion amongst Chelsea fans and the answer is usually pretty inconclusive. Can Eidur really replace Franco?
In my opinion... yes! I have no fears about his ability on the ball, or his movement off it, nor do I have any real concerns over his finishing. However, there was one thought going through my head, a doubt if you will: Does Eidur possess the ability to play the killer pass, that little bit more creativity that Franco Zola possess'?
Cast your mind back to the Newcastle game on Saturday and a moment in the second half when Jesper Gronkjaer was played through on goal only to miss the ball completely. The pass to him was magnificent, over about 15-25 yards along the ground. It split the defence wonderfully and in all fairness a goal should have been the outcome. The player who passed it... Eidur Gudjohnsen.
It proves that the vision is there. He also appears to be extremely confident in his own ability- how else can you explain that truly spectacular bicycle-kick against Leeds? Is it arrogance though- I'm afraid the jury's out on that one until I actually meet the bloke (if only, eh!)...
One thing's for sure though- if anyone can do it, Eidur can!!
