With a midfield packed to the rafters full of quality players, there's got to be at least one fall guy. Who will that man be?? Well, I think we can safely say that the four midfielders brought in this summer are all going to play a big part in the forthcoming season.
So we will focus on the likes of Frank Lampard, Manu Petit and Bolo Zenden.
Lamps was one of Chelsea's key players last season, after a pretty disappointing first season at the club. Now, he seems so much more mature and he has the ability to become the next Roy Keane- without the temper though. I think it will be a case of who partners Frank in the Chelsea midfield this summer...
What of Manu Petit? He has just a year left on his Chelsea contract, which I fully expect him to see out. Many Chelsea fans have been disappointed with his performances in the blue shirt. What you must realise is that he is not the same player that he was at Arsenal 5 years ago- and he hasn't been since then. But what he offers the side is a very solid option in midfield, especially in the big Champions League games when we will be facing the likes of Zidane and Rui Costa. So I see Manu, whilst not a regular in the side, at least having some sort of contribution to this season.
Now to Bolo Zenden. Bolo is, much like Jesper Gronkjaer, an enigma. He is very much an out and out winger yet I feel that he could do a decent job anywhere across the middle. However, he has had his number 11 shirt taken away from him and I expect him to be on his way out.
Jesper Gronkjaer is a completely different prospect though. Even though he has as much consistency as the Stamford Bridge pitch in winter, his pace is always a threat. If he can develop his final ball (i.e. crossing and shooting) he will be just as good as Damien Duff. Can you imagine those two (Duff on the left, Gronks on the right) playing in the same team. All I can say is, it's not a good season to be a full back... However, Geremi appears to be earmarked for the right hand side, yet if Gronks proves himself when he does play then Claudio simply cannot leave him out.
And finally, I bring you Mario Stanic. Another enigma, Mario blows hot and cold far too often for my liking. But there is no denying that he adds a much needed aerial presence to our attacks and he certainly chipped in with his fair share of goals last season. But there is no doubt in my mind that he will be nothing more than a utility man this season- jack of all trades, master of nothing.
So, in conclusion, here's my midfield for the Zilinia game next week:
Geremi- Lamps- Veron- Duff
