Chelsea: 2003/04
In goal, there is no doubt that Carlo Cudicini is the main man. If he keeps up his form of last season, the goals against coloumn will stay low all season.
Right back should be Melchiot. He's still an excellent player with a big part to play for Chelsea- although I expect Glen Johnson to be eased in gently. But expect to see Melchiot as more of a utility player next season, deputising in midfield if no reinforcements are brought in.
At left back, for £7 million, it has to be Wayne Bridge. Baba was poor last season and, unless he returns to his form a few years ago, his Chelsea days could be numbered. But with so many games ahead, I think Baba may get chances to return to the team. It's up to him to take them...
Centre backs are the toughest position to pick from. Claudio may still favour the experience of Marcel Desailly. He may try to ease Marcel out of the picture slowly- I don't know. But William Gallas simply cannot be left out of the team after his form last season, so it is between John Terry and Marcel Desailly to fight it out for the other position. I wouldn't like to choose- unless Claudio plans to play all three together...
Right wing is another tough position. Jesper Gronkjaer finally seems to be finding his feet, and it cannot be denied that he is a dangerous player. But he is often anonymous in matches and, with Duff on the other wing, Claudio may not feel that his team is ready to play with two out and out wingers. So I'm gonna go with Geremi.
Left wing is easy- Damien Duff. Bolo Zenden won't like it, but he is a versatile player who still has a big part to play next season. In fact, I can see Bolo playing in some sort of playmaker role against the smaller teams.
Central midfield is a tough position, as there are so few players competing for places. Unless Claudio goes with two out and out wingers and plays Geremi through the middle with Lamps, I see Manu Petit and Lamps leading from the middle again. Of course, any new signings would soon change that.
And finally we come to the strikers. Eidur Gudjohnsen and Jimmy Floyd Hasslebaink get my vote- Eidur looks as sharp as ever this summer, and as for Jimmy... Well, I think that last season was merely a blip, and I back him to be back to his goalscoring best in no time. Mikael Forssell can be first back up and I cannot wait to see this guy play again. Judging by what I've heard from Germany, he's developed into a quality striker so that's good to hear. Carlton Cole is another who I can't wait to see. He was such a great discovery last season, and I'm sure he can go on to surpass Wayne Rooney as the hottest young striker in England. In my eyes, Cole is just as good as Rooney, if not better...
So there you have it, my thoughts on how our team may look. Of course, if Roman continues his spending spree, it could still look very different. Will there be the inclusion of a certain Juan Seba Veron??
