Player Ratings: Stuttgart (h)

Carlo Cudicini- How refreshing it was to see Carlo kick the ball without grimacing! Aside from that, he made a number of comfortable saves, not to mention one excellent save. 8

Glen Johnson- Started off well but damaged his ankle whilst challenging for a set piece in the Stuttgart box. Came back on and tried to run it off but to no avail, making way for Marcel Desailly. 6

John Terry- Solid as a rock! Is there a better english central defender at the moment? 9

William Gallas- Jonno's early departure saw Willy sent to right back. Got forward well enough, but didn't look his usual self in defence. 7

Wayne Bridge- Made a few good forages up the left wing but was generally very poor. Insisted on continously hoofing the ball long to lone striker Crespo, despite the fact that the ball just came straight back at us! 6

Claude Makelele- Decent game for Claude. Always looks more comfortable in the Champions League and his experienced head was vital in the midfield. 8

Scott Parker- Poor game for Scotty but who can blame the poor lad? He has spent most of his Chelsea career on either of the flanks and he just doesn't look comfortable there. 6

Frank Lampard- Looks at home in the Champions League and he played his part in a hard fought draw. One of the few players to consistently support Crespo, until Ranieri pushed Duffer further upfield- a move which saw Lamps' influence wane... 8

Jesper Gronkjaer- Probably had more of the ball than anyone- for 80 minutes, it seemed he could do no right! Pass after pass astray... Then Mutu came on and it sparked Jesper into life- with Stuttgart pushing forward, he was electrifying for the last ten minutes and hit the post with a rasping drive! 4 (first 80 minutes)- 9 (last 10 minutes)

Damien Duff- His touch regularly let him down but when it served him well, he was able to really get at the Stuttgart defence. Give him a few more weeks and he'll be back to his best! Struggled at times as Claudio regularly changed his position throughout the game. 8

Hernan Crespo- Held the ball up well enough and his work rate was better than normal. Needs a proper striker's goal (not chesting the ball in against Pompey) to get his confidence back- although his play making skills were excellent at times tonight. 7

Subs

Marcel Desailly- Replaced Geln Johnson. Looked assured alongside JT and only the odd communication error let him down. 8

Geremi- Replaced Scott Parker. Got stuck in, but didn't really offer us anything different. 7

Adrian Mutu- Replaced Damien Duff. Came on with about 10 minutes to go and, suprise surprise, that was when the game sparked into life. Headed a Gronkjaer cross straight at Hildebrand, before firing straight at the keeper when presented with a one-on-one. 8
