Rolling Back The Years...
One argument is that, without Damien Duff, we are too one dimensional. And I can go along with that to an extent. For the first 20 minutes yesterday, Jimmy and Eidur seemed to have redeveloped the telepathic link, and it seemed like they wouldn't need their teammates! But the midfielders were creating, so we had the best of both worlds. Hence, a very good team performance!
But that is not the way things were when they had their great partnership. Look back to the 2001/02 season and I am pretty sure you will find that the majority of the 50+ goals scored by the partnership were created by each other. It was vital back then as we had no one else to rely on, but now it can be used as an effective weapon...
Because I believe that, injuries and suspensions permitting, Claudio Ranieri should go for consistency with his strike pairings. So Jimmy and Eidur always play together and Crespo and Mutu always play together. Obviously this cannot be implemented at present, with Hernan injured (again!).
But it is an idea worth developing, especially if it results in more goal fests like the one at the Walkers Stadium!
