Chelsea produced a disciplined performance as late goals by Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and substitute Wayne Bridge secured an impressive 2-0 victory against Turkish champions Besiktas in the AufSchalke Arena.
The victory ensures Claudio Ranieri's side finish top of Group G but Besiktas are out of the Champions League as Sparta Prague finish as surprise runners-up after their 1-0 victory against Lazio.
It was sweet revenge for the Blues who had lost 2-0 to Besiktas at Stamford Bridge in early October.
Chelsea looked composed from the start in the volatile atmosphere and almost took the lead in the 15th minute when the ball fell to Celestine Babayaro but the Nigerian saw his shot well saved by Oscar Cordoba.
The visitors almost broke the deadlock ten minutes before the break when Hasselbaink set up Frank Lampard but the England midfielder drove his effort just over the bar.
Besiktas grew increasingly frustrated as the game wore on although Claude Makelele was forced to hack one Ilhan Mansiz effort away from danger.
With just 13 minutes left the Premiership leaders took the lead when Hasselbaink slotted the ball home after great play by Damien Duff.
They sealed their victory in the 85th minute when substitute Bridge scored after being set up by Glen Johnson.
It was a well-earned victory for Chelsea who looked solid throughout and were not put off by a steady stream of missiles that rained on to the pitch.
Besiktas may well face action from UEFA following the trouble but it is their exit from the Champions League that will hit them hardest.
