Blues Lift Asia Cup

The Blues dominated the match and should have won the game in normal time but for the heroics of Newcastle keeper Shay Given.

Chelsea picked a strong lineup for the match, with Alexis Nicolas as the only member of the side that isn't part of the first team squad. However, on this performance, Nicolas was outstanding and looks like a very good player for the future.

Newcastle, on the other hand, saved most of their big guns for the second half. That's not to say that their first half team wasn't any good!!

Eidur Gudjohnsen should have given us the lead early on, but he couldn't quite lift the ball over the on rushing Given. Hasslebaink also drew a couple of good saves from Given in the first half, whilst Eidur's movement was causing the Newcastle defence massive problems. He found himself in great positions throughout the match, with the passes to him not quite up to standard though- that should come with match fitness though...

By half time, the score was still 0-0. But our Geordie opponents couldn't even muster a shot on target, whilst Given was certainly kept busy! In the second half, Glen Johnson went close with a cross/shot which Given was forced to tip over. Bolo Zenden also caught Given out with a little chip, although his effort finished up just wide of the post, sparing Given's blushes.

Chelsea finisherd the match with three substitutions, obviously with penalties in mind. Forrsell, Duff and Keenan all came on, but could have little impact in the game. At the end of 90 minutes it was still 0-0 and penalties would be required. Newcastle still hadn't mustered a shot on goal...

In the shootout, Lamps slotted home before Shearer smashed against the bar. Duff then missed his spot kick, before Laurent Robert did exactly the same! Huth made no mistake next, smashing the ball down the middle before Kieron Dyer outsmarted Carlo with a great penalty.

Gudjohnsen kept the pressure on by wrong footing Given, with Lee Bowyer also scoring his penalty. Then, Jimmy stepped up to score the winner... or that's what should have happened, but Given hadn't read the script- the Ireland keeper made an outrageous save to keep Newcy in the game. Bellamy made sure it went to sudden death. Keenan and Woodgate confidently scored, JT slotted home... it all came down to Jermaine Jenas.

Unfortunately for the young lad, he tried to be far too clever and chipped the ball over the bar into the crowd. It was hilarious to watch, yet at the same time I really felt for the youngster- everyone wants to score a cheeky penalty, but there's a time and a place- training! Suffice to say he won't make the same mistake again!

JT lifted the trophy high, as Chelsea became the first winners of the FA Premier League Asia Cup!
