What should have been a comfortable win for Chelsea, ended with the crowd whistling for the final whistle .
A thumping shot by Eden Hazard on 29 minutes was enough to secure all three points for Chelsea as they overcame a stylish Swansea City at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho must be pulling out what is left of his hair as the home side missed numerous chances in the first half and should have sent the Welsh side home packing with a six or seven goal hammering.
As it was, they didn't and that resulted in a frustrating second half, where at times, they were clinging into their minimal lead.
They go second into the Premier League, albeit for a few hours, which for a side in transition can't really be a bad thing.
A quiet start by both sides, while Chelsea dominated possession, Swansea a lady seemed ready to waste time.
Jose Mourinho after just five minutes, tapped his watch as if to suggest that the visitors were looking to kill time. Goalkeeper Gerhard Tremmel, took a few extra seconds than expected to take a goal kick.
From a deep free kick by Jonjo Shelvey on seven minutes, Jordi Alba was free in the box. thankfully his unchallenged glancing header was too high and went over Petr Cech's crossbar. but it was a signal that the Chelsea arguably needed to be fully concentrated.
Oscar had a good chance to race in on goal two minutes later but he failed to control a defence-splitting pass by Eden Hazard and the ball was quickly cleared by Ashley Williams.
A fine counter-attacking move involving five blues players almost reaped dividends on 11. I hates, but a late desperate lunge by Williams forced the ball, smashed in from the right by Bransilav Ivanovic, over the Swansea crossbar.
Shelvey tried his luck from 20 yards after other passing options were cut out, but he scuffed his shot wide of goal.
Hazard, following a neat one-two with Samuel Eto'o, also scuffed his shot, although his was a bit closer to goal.
Ramires pinged a fine 25-yarder on 17 minutes which Tremmel did well to smother as the Blues exerted more pressure on the Swans goal.
Skipper, John Terry was next up to try his luck, getting into the end of a brilliant Oscar left byline cross. sadly for the centre-half, playing his 599 game for Chelsea, he like jet the ball into the ground, of bounced towards goal, but Tremmel tipped the ball over his crossbar.
A sensational period of pressure ensured resulting in Amat hacking the ball off his goal line as
Chelsea laid siege on the visitors goal. Mikel was about to tap the ball home before the Swansea defender's long legs intervened preventing a certain goal.
But the inevitable happened on 28 minutes. Ashley Cole, restored to. The starting line-up, fed the ball on the left to Hazard. The Belgium midfielder cut inside, past Amat and let fly with a rasping drive that zipped past Williams"s desperate dive and then right past Tremmel and I to the back of the net.
Tremmel then made a hash of a back pass and was lucky to escape the on rushing Eto'o's attempt to snaffle the ball.
Up at he other end two minutes lasted and Cech was happy to see a Alvaro Vazquez half-volley inch over his crossbar.
Shelvey tried an audacious 30-yard free kick with eight minutes of the half to go, but his wayward shot sailed high and wide of Cech's goal, much to the frustration on the bench of his manager Michael Laudrup.
Eto'o should have made it 2-0 on 41 minutes when he broke free and chased down a brilliant Juan Mata through ball. But the Cameroon striker miscued his left-foot shot from just inside the Swansea penalty area, allowing Tremmel the easiest of saves.
Eto'o can be forgiven to think he will never score when, just 20 seconds into the second half, he saw his volley from close range sensational beaten away by Tremmel. There was a brilliant piece of set-up play by Mata whose byline cross left Eto'o free.
Hazard and Ivanovic had good half-chances as the Blues went forward in search of the safety net of a second goal.
Laudrup replaced Jose Canas for Jonathan de Guzman on 61 minutes.
In response, Jose Mourinho brought on veteran Frank Lampard for Brazil midfielder Oscar six minutes later, closet followed by Andre Schurrle for Mata on 71 minutes.
Tremmel produced another fine save to thwart Lampard, when the England man's daisy-cut seemed destined for The far corner of the Swansea net, Tremmel managed to get across his goal line and tip the ball round his right upright for a corner.
With the score only 1-0, anything could happen and Laudrup sensed that perhaps with 15 minutes of the match remaining, it was the time to introduce striker Wilfred Bony. Luckless Wayne Routledge made way.
Chelsea's justified response was to take off Hazard on 82 minutes. the nidfielder had run himself into the ground for the Blues' cause and bring on Willian, in an attempt to regain the initiative.
The first yellow card issued by referee Michael Jones went to Chelsea's Ramires for upending Bony in the middle of the park.
A glancing header by Bony, which inched wide of Cech's left post, with three minutes of the game left, increased the sense of frustration among the 41,111 crowd.
Thankfully, that was the end of the action and Chelsea saw out the remaining seconds.
