A much changed Chelsea lineup never looked threatened on Tuesday night. Glen Johnson opened the scoring with a fine header after half an hour. It was the first competitive goal of Johnson's short career.
Robert Huth also scored his first competitive goal after half time. The young German replaced Marcel Desailly shortly after the break and was soon on the score sheet. He headed in a deep cross by Manu Petit.
The fans were buzzing at this point- well, all 23,000 of us. Hernan Crespo had been unveiled at half time, to rapturous applause.
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, who had a torrid night, closed the scoring towards the end. In a neat move also involving Geremi and Eidur Gudjohnsen, Jimmy broke clear of the defence and finished superbly.
Robert Huth, who is already a fans favourite, should have added a fourth. From all of 40-yards, he struck an incredible free kick which cannoned against the bar and over the line. Unfortunately the linesman was poorly placed and didn't award the goal.
From then onwards, whenever Huth touched the ball the crowd chanted his name. Several shouts of "shoot" could also be heard whenver, and indeed wherever, he touched the ball.
Overall a satisfactory night for Chelsea- Champions League football is on the horizon, and Hernan Crespo is now onboard...
