Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink bagged a couple of goals as Chelsea thrashed Everton to go into the fifth round of the Worthington cup where they will play Manchester United at Old Trafford.
It took the Londoners 26 minutes to break a dogged Everton defence and it was created by Gianfranco Zola. Frank Lampard broke up an Everton break and fed the ball to Sardinian.
Zola, 36, produced the pass of the night as he curled a low, left-wing drive into the grateful path of Hasselbaink, around the despairing Joseph Yobo. Hasselbaink took one touch before rifling in a left-footer across the body of goalkeeper Richard Wright, into the bottom right-hand corner of the net.
A minute before half time and the game was over as a contest. ZolaÂ’s inch-perfect chip to the in-running Emmanuel Petit was gleefully taken by the Frenchman as he slotted home from just inside the penalty area, beating a static defence.
Goalscorer Hasselbaink became goal creator when his 69th minute corner was met by a powerful header by Mario Stanic from six yards. Two minutes later and Hasselbaink grabbed his second.
A fortunate knock-on by Mario Melchiot to Hasselbaink saw the Dutchman pick the ball up just outside the penalty area on the left-hand side. He blasted a low, piledriver through a melee of players and it skipped up in front of Wright and ended in the back of the net.
“Zola produced a couple of fantastic passes which we should have done better against,” admitted Everton boss David Moyes. “But Chelsea are a good side and we certainly know what we are up against when we play them at our place in the league on Saturday.” Everton wonder kid Wayne Rooney had a rude awakening and now knows what it's like to play against quality opposition. The 18-year-old had a miserable match and even missed a penalty on 79 minutes when William Gallas handled the ball in the area as it spun off his head.
Everton managed to take advantage of the resultant corner where substitute Gary Naysmith tapped in a simple right-footer from two yards out
