The early minutes of the game saw little or no goalmouth action, although Deco was starting to look threatening from an advanced midfield role.
However, the home side hit the front 14 minutes in as Jose Bosingwa found space down the right and played in a superb cross for Frank Lampard to arrive and head home unmarked from eight yards out.
Five minutes later Nicolas Anelka made space over on the left and fired in a low right-footer which forced keeper Ulrich Rame into a decent save at his near post.
Three minutes further on Bosingwa cut in from the right and his ball into the area was deflected goalwards by Fernando, with Rame forced to make a smart save to prevent an own goal.
On the half-hour mark it was 2-0 as Lampard's near-post corner from the left was deftly back-headed into the net past Rame by Joe Cole.
Lampard should have added a third before half-time, but shot wide when in the clear ten yards out after Bosingwa's deflected cross had dropped into his path.
The early part of the second half was as quiet as the first had been, before Anelka went close to adding a third goal just past the hour mark, shooting into the side-netting from an acute angle on the right.
It wasn't until eight minutes from time that Chelsea extended their lead, as John Obi Mikel and Lampard combined to set up Florent Malouda to drive a left-foot shot just inside the far post from 15 yards.
Three minutes from the end Lampard's deep corner from the left found an unmarked Ricardo Carvalho, but he headed against the top of the crossbar from eight yards out.
In time added-on Anelka's low shot struck the outside of the post and went out for a goal-kick, before the Frenchman grabbed a well-deserved goal.
Sub Juliano Belletti smashed in a shot from distance which Rame tipped onto the crossbar and Anelka was on hand to sweep home the loose ball from close range to round off a comfortable win.
