A dominant Chelsea performance at Anfield was all in vein as Vladimir Smicer's injury time strike gave Liverpool the points. The Blues had an excellent first half and deserved to have taken the lead when Eidur Gudjohnsen met Jesper Gronkjaer's cross with his left foot but he failed to direct it towards the goal. Liverpool struggled to create anything and Chelsea had another great chance to take the lead when Mario Stanic met Gudjohnsen's deep cross with a wonderful left foot volley. But somehow, Jerzy Dudek managed to keep the ball out and Hasselbaink blazed the rebound into the crowd. Cudicini didn't even have to make a save in the opening period, displaying Chelsea's excellent defensive abilities.
The second half started with Liverpool continuing to search for a goal but failing to create any gilt edged chances. Chelsea, on the other hand, continued to make chances and looked dangerous throughout. Gudjohnsen linked up well with Hasselbaink only to slice a good chance wide. Liverpool then had a succession of corners, culminating with substitute Michael Owen drawing a good stop from Cudicini. The game destined to finish all square after Hasselbaink's chip beat Dudek but bounced off the top of the bar. However, Liverpool had other ideas and, in stoppage time, Heskey sent over a great ball for Vladimir Smicer to volley past the helpless Cudicini.
The result was very harsh on the Blues and is a massive dent to their Champions League hopes whereas Liverpool are now top of the Premiership and on course to lift their first league championship in over a decade.
