Michel Essien powered Chelsea to an emphatic away win against Upton Park with two fine headers as the Blues remain top of the Premier League.

An additional goal from Salomon Kalou and a wonder volley from Scott Parker were the other scorers.

Chelsea now have four wins out of four, while West Ham experience their worst start to a season in their history with their fourth straight defeat.

It took just two minutes for Chelsea to take the lead when Michael Essien powered home a header from a Didier Drogba free kick.

At the time of the goal it was almost 10 hours since the Blues had conceded a goal.

On ten minutes Victor Obinna cut in from the left, but scythed a right-footer so wide it went out for a throw-in on the other side of the pitch.

With Frank Lampard not recovered from his groin operation, Ramires took his place in the centre of the midfield.

On 17 minutes Chelsea took complete control.

Drogba took a vicious Ronaldo-like 30-yard free kick which Robert Green spilled.  Matthew Upson tried to clear but kicked the ball into Salomon Kalou’s heel and the ball scooped over Green’s head into the back of the empty net to put the Blues two up.

Kalou almost hit his second two minutes later but his edge-of-the-box left footer was deflected away for a corner.

Obinna had a great chance to get the Hammers back into the game but his left-footed volley was just wide of Petr Cech’s left upright on 27 minutes.

Either side of the goals, the home side had good spells of possession without troubling Chelsea’s rearguard too much.

Obinna- West Ham’s best player of the half struck a fine right-footer on 30 minutes from just at the edge of the Chelsea penalty box, but the 23-year-old’s shot was just over the crossbar.

Ivanovic rattled the angle of bar and crossbar on 33 minutes with a fine strike from just outside the West Ham area.

Ashley Cole was given a yellow card for upending Behrami on 40 minutes.

Cech was forced into punching clear an Obinna by-line cross on 43 minutes and seconds later Scott Parker was yellow carded for a poor tackle on Nicolas Anelka.

West Ham had the ball in the back of the net on the stroke of half-time but Carlton Cole was clearly offside as he stroked the ball calmly past Cech.

West Ham replaced with Kieran Dyer at half-time for Luis Boa-Morte, but it was The Blues who had the first effort of the half when Ramires produced a hopeful strike from long-range two minutes in.

Carlton Cole beat the offside trap a minute later but failed to get hold of a defence-splitting Obinna through-ball.

Ramires tried his luck five minutes later, this time from closer range, but the result was a poor shot over Green’s goal.

Cech was alert to a quick ball when Obinna raced into the Chelsea area on 56 minutes but he snaffled the ball to his chest and to safety.

Inspired by Scott Parker, in midfield, West Ham had the lion’s share of possession in the early part of second half.

On 65 minutes Chelsea unleashed a brilliant 25 yard curler which Green did well to parry away.

Ivanovic was given a yellow card seconds later for a foul on Carlton Cole.

Mark Noble saw his speculative shot on 69 minutes go wide as the home side piled on the pressure on the champions.

West Ham replaced Behrami with Piquionne with 18 minutes remaining.

But the next piece of action on goal, on 73 minutes, was a Drogba free-kick which saw ball fall to Ivanovic, but Green was quick to smother the ball away for a corner.

Chelsea replaced Anelka with Gael Kakuta on 75 minutes in order to restore some control lost in midfield.

Chelsea won their first six games of the Premier League last season which boss Carlo Ancelotti said was pivotal in winning back the title.

Ancelotti replaced John terry with Alex with nine minutes remaining. It’s unsure if Terry has injured his calf  again which forced him out of England contention last week or just rested ahead of the Champions League match against Zilina on Wednesday.

The captain’s armband was given to Drogba.

Within a minute Essien killed the game off with a fantastic header from Essien, eight yards out, who towered above Tal Ben-Haim and powered the ball past Green.

But it was the superb set-up play which resulted in a beautiful cross from Paula Ferreira to Essien to secure all three points.

Florent Malouda then replaced Kalou.

But within a minute Scott Parker breached Chelsea’s defence for the first time this season when Parker side-footed an exquisite volley over the head of Cech and into the visitor’s net from just outside the Chelsea area.

With two minutes remaining West Ham should have a had a second when Piquionne missed the goal of the season or any other season by heading an open goal chance onto the Chelsea crossbar.

Noble was handed a yellow card deep in injury into for a late challenge on Cech but Chelsea’s 100 per cent record remained intact and the Blues stay top of the league.
